NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) — An Australian man was killed Saturday afternoon when an 87-year-old driver ran a red light, striking four pedestrians on Lower Broadway.
Timothy Wedlock, 58, of Australia, was pronounced dead at the scene of the collision, which occurred just after 12:30 p.m. at the intersection of Fourth Avenue North and Broadway. According to Metro Nashville Police, Thomas Cahill, 87, of Bowling Green, Kentucky, was driving a 2013 Ford Fusion south on Fourth Avenue when he failed to stop at the red light.
A 44-year-old man from Jacksonville, Florida, remains in critical condition at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. A 21-year-old woman from Knoxville sustained non-life-threatening injuries, while a 58-year-old woman from Parsons is reported in critical but stable condition.
Authorities are investigating whether Cahill may have experienced a medical emergency prior to the crash. Police confirmed he did not show signs of impairment. Cahill and his 90-year-old wife, who was a passenger, were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
Bystanders attempted to assist the victims immediately following the incident. Metro officials are evaluating vehicle access on Lower Broadway, a high-traffic area for pedestrians, though no closures were deemed necessary at the time of the incident.
No charges have been filed as investigations continue.
