ALDSWORTH, England (WKRC) — A 21-year-old woman has had her prison sentence increased following a high-speed crash that killed two people on December 2, 2022.
Liberty Mitchell, of Chipping Norton, was originally sentenced to six years and eight months for her actions, which included recording herself driving recklessly. Her sentence has now been increased to nine years and three months following a referral from the U.K. Attorney General to the Court of Appeal.
According to the Attorney General's Office, Mitchell was driving on the wrong side of the road at nearly 100 mph in a 60 mph zone when she attempted to overtake three vehicles. She collided with a taxi, causing a multi-vehicle crash.
Taxi driver Octavian Codreanu died at the scene, while passenger Moyra Whelan, a history teacher, succumbed to her injuries later in the hospital. Additionally, six other individuals sustained injuries; three suffered serious injuries.
Investigators discovered videos on Mitchell's social media depicting her dangerous driving, including a recording of her traveling at 100 mph. Authorities confirmed that Mitchell was driving for work-related purposes at the time of the crash, although her insurance did not cover business use.
Mitchell pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including causing death by dangerous driving and driving without insurance. She has been disqualified from driving for eight years and four months and must complete an extended driving test to regain her license.
Attorney General Ellie Reeves stated that Mitchell's “reckless actions behind the wheel claimed the lives of two people and left many others with life-changing injuries.”
