Families of Boeing 737 MAX Crash Victims Demand Justice in Court

Families of 346 victims from Boeing 737 MAX crashes gathered outside a Fort Worth federal court on Wednesday, urging a judge to reject a motion seeking to dismiss felony conspiracy charges against Boeing. The motion is linked to two disasters in 2018 and 2019.

U.S. District Chief Judge Reed O'Connor allowed crash victims' relatives to speak during the hearing, some of whom traveled internationally to advocate for accountability. Nadia Milleron, whose daughter perished in the Ethiopian crash, expressed her frustration: “I don't want any other family member to lose their loved ones because of this kind of fraud.”

Prosecutors allege that Boeing misled Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) officials regarding a flight-control system connected to the fatal accidents. The Justice Department announced charges against Boeing more than four years ago, leading to a $2.5 billion settlement that spared the company from criminal prosecution if it improved compliance programs. However, the department revived charges last year after Boeing allegedly violated terms of the agreement.

In May, the parties reached a new settlement that involved Boeing paying $1.1 billion for fines, victim compensation, and enhanced safety measures. While some families support this resolution, nearly 100 oppose it, fearing it allows Boeing to evade justice.

Attorneys for affected families argue for the appointment of a special prosecutor to move the case forward. They claim the agreement undermines accountability. Justice Department officials noted that some families support settling the case, while the judge remains deliberative on his ruling.

Investigations revealed that a software flaw caused the crashes, with Boeing failing to disclose critical changes to the FAA before certification.

The situation continues to unfold as the families seek resolution and accountability for the tragic loss of their loved ones.
