MILLVILLE, DE — June 12, 2026, 1:07 p.m. ET — A Maryland woman faces multiple charges linked to a fatal bicycle accident that occurred June 9.
Duane Pershing, 52, from Ocean View, died on June 10 following the incident. According to Delaware State Police, Pershing was cycling westbound in the eastbound bike lane on Atlantic Avenue when he was struck by a Subaru Forester driven by 46-year-old Kara Gilmore from Ocean City, Maryland, around 9:05 p.m.
Authorities stated that Gilmore's vehicle veered off the roadway and hit Pershing before she fled the scene. Gilmore was located shortly after when her vehicle became disabled in the parking lot of Artisans' Bank on Atlantic Avenue in Ocean View.
She has been charged with first-degree vehicular assault, leaving the scene of an injury collision, driving under the influence, and other related offenses. Gilmore was released after posting over $3,000 bail.
The day after Pershing's death, police obtained an additional warrant for Gilmore. She was subsequently arrested in Maryland and will be charged with second-degree vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of a fatal collision upon her extradition to Delaware.
An investigation into the crash is ongoing.
