BOSTON, MA — A wrong-way crash on Interstate 93 early Sunday morning has resulted in one fatality and multiple injuries, authorities confirmed.

The deceased has been identified as 28-year-old Riley Sergi from Haverhill, Massachusetts, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office. The alleged wrong-way driver, an 81-year-old man from Somerset, has not yet been charged, and the investigation is ongoing.

Massachusetts State Police responded shortly before midnight to a report of a collision on I-93 north near Exit 15A. Initial inquiries indicate that a Escalade veered onto the northbound lanes from Exit 15B, heading southbound. A Odyssey and an A4, attempting to evade the Escalade, collided. The family of four in the Odyssey was taken to a Boston hospital for evaluation.

The head-on impact involved the Escalade and a Cruze, leading to both drivers being transported to local hospitals. Sergi later succumbed to his injuries. The condition of the wrong-way driver remains unconfirmed, as prosecutors did not release further details.

Witnesses reported the crash, with one, NBC10 Boston reporter Malcolm Johnson, providing assistance at the scene. “It happened just a few cars ahead of me,” he stated, noting the chaotic environment.

Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey expressed condolences and highlighted ongoing efforts aimed at improving road safety through advanced detection technology and infrastructure upgrades, in response to a troubling rise in wrong-way incidents statewide. The latest fatal collision marks the third such crash in Massachusetts within a week.
