BOSTON — Several people were seriously injured in a multi-car crash in the southbound lanes of the Southeast Expressway at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Massachusetts State Police confirmed.
Initial reports indicated a fatality, but later information clarified that a person is in serious condition. “The individual who we had thought had succumbed to their injuries is actually in serious condition,” a state police spokesperson stated.
The crash occurred near Exit 15 and involved two black SUVs. One SUV suffered extensive front damage and was leaking a substance onto the roadway, while the other sustained rear-end damage and was surrounded by debris.
Boston Fire and EMS crews are on the scene, and the left two lanes of the expressway are closed. Authorities advise drivers to expect delays as an investigation is underway into the cause of the crash.
Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
