LYNNFIELD, Mass. — A wrong-way crash on Route 1 early Saturday morning resulted in the death of Trooper Kevin Trainor, 30, and the driver of the other vehicle.
The incident occurred just after 2 a.m. when Trainor's cruiser was struck by a Jeep traveling south in the northbound lane near the Saugus/Lynnfield line. According to state police, Trainor was responding to reports of the wrong-way vehicle at the time.
Surveillance footage from Kelly Jeep indicates the wrong-way vehicle was speeding moments before the collision. The discrepancy in the video timestamp was attributed to Daylight Saving Time, with the actual time of the crash confirmed at 2 a.m.
Trainor, who was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital, was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. The wrong-way driver has been identified as Hernan Marrero, 50, of Roslindale, according to the Essex County District Attorney's Office.
Massachusetts State Police Col. Geoffrey Noble called Trainor a hero for his bravery and commitment to public safety, noting, “He saved lives this morning.”
Trainor began his career as a corrections officer in Essex County and joined the Massachusetts State Police Department following his graduation from the academy in 2023. He is survived by his mother, fiancée, and several siblings.
