LYNNFIELD, MA — Massachusetts State Police Trooper Kevin Trainor, 30, was killed early Wednesday in a wrong-way crash on Route 1.
According to authorities, Trainor was responding to a 911 call about a vehicle driving north in the southbound lanes when he was involved in a head-on collision with the wrong-way driver, identified as Hernan Marrero, 50, of Boston. Both drivers succumbed to their injuries; Trainor later died at a hospital in Boston.
Emergency responders attended the scene following the 2:01 a.m. incident. Traffic was halted as Trainor's body was escorted in a ceremonial procession from Boston to a funeral home in Peabody on Thursday evening. First responders lined the route to pay their respects.
State Police Colonel Geoffrey Noble praised Trainor's dedication to public service during a press briefing, stating, “Kevin epitomized what it means to be a public servant.” Trainor graduated from the Massachusetts State Police 88th recruit training class in 2023 and served as a mentor for new troopers.
Governor Maura Healey expressed condolences, calling Trainor a hero who died while safeguarding the community. The investigation into the collision remains ongoing as the state police continue to gather details about the incident.
Vigils have been held across Massachusetts in memory of Trooper Trainor, who is remembered for his commitment to safety and service.
