LYNNFIELD, Mass. — New surveillance footage reveals the moments leading up to a fatal crash involving Massachusetts State Trooper Kevin Trainor and a wrong-way driver on Route 1 North early Wednesday morning.
The video shows Hernan Marrero, 50, entering a jug handle around 2 a.m. Instead of proceeding correctly across the lanes, Marrero makes a sharp left turn into oncoming traffic, traveling south in the northbound lanes. A vehicle headed in the correct direction had a green light at the time.
Further footage from Kelly Jeep‘s cameras near the Lynnfield Tunnel captured Marrero's Jeep Wrangler emerging from the tunnel but driving against traffic. Subsequently, Marrero crashed head-on into Trooper Trainor.
Authorities confirmed that Trooper Trainor died at the hospital, while Marrero was pronounced dead at the scene. An investigation is ongoing, and the scene has been secured for further assessment. No other vehicles were reported to be involved in the collision.
