NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) — A fatal crash on Lower Broadway occurred Saturday afternoon when an 87-year-old driver ran a red light, striking four pedestrians.
Metro Nashville Police identified the deceased as Timothy Wedlock, 58, from Australia. He succumbed to injuries sustained in the collision at about 12:30 p.m. at Fourth Avenue North.
Authorities reported that Thomas Cahill, 87, of Bowling Green, Kentucky, was driving a 2013 Ford Fusion south on Fourth Avenue when he failed to stop at a red light. Two individuals were seriously injured: a 44-year-old man from Jacksonville, Florida, remains in critical condition, while a 58-year-old woman from Parsons, Tennessee, is critical but stable at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. A 21-year-old woman from Knoxville suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
Emergency responders, including Metro Nashville Police and Medical Examiners, arrived on scene where bystanders attempted to assist victims. Witnesses noted a rapid response from nearby businesses.
Cahill and his wife, 90, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were hospitalized. Investigators confirmed that no evidence of impairment was found; however, they are assessing whether Cahill may have experienced a medical emergency.
The incident has revived discussions on vehicle access on Lower Broadway, a major pedestrian area, although officials noted no closure was warranted at the time.
No charges have been announced as the investigation continues.
