Boone Man Dead, Two Children Hospitalized After Head-On Crash
BOONE, Iowa — A head-on collision in Boone resulted in one fatality and two children hospitalized on Sunday night.
At approximately 9:30 p.m., Joshua Burns, 45, of Boone, was driving a Jeep Renegade southbound on Story Street when his vehicle veered off the road into a ditch. According to an Iowa State Patrol crash report, Burns' vehicle re-entered the roadway in northbound lanes near the intersection of Story Street and Kate Shelley Drive, colliding with a Ford Edge head-on.
Burns died at the scene, authorities confirmed.
Two children in the Ford Edge sustained injuries. A 7-month-old was transported by Boone Fire and EMS to a nearby hospital, while a 3-year-old was airlifted with life-threatening injuries.
The incident remains under investigation.
According to the Iowa Department of Transportation, 183 people have died on Iowa roads this year, marking an increase of 15 fatalities compared to the same time last year. Over the past five years, an average of 337 fatalities from traffic accidents has occurred annually statewide.
