ABINGTON, Mass. — A 17-year-old boy from Weymouth was killed and four others were injured in a crash involving a stolen SUV Wednesday morning, according to the Plymouth County District Attorney's Office.
Authorities said at approximately 7:47 a.m., Abington police officers attempted to stop a Hyundai Tucson that had been reported stolen. The SUV subsequently left the roadway and struck a tree near 877 Washington St.
Five individuals were inside the vehicle at the time of the incident.
A 14-year-old female passenger was ejected from the SUV, while three others, including one male and two females, sustained life-threatening injuries. They were initially taken to local hospitals and later transferred to Boston hospitals for further treatment.
The driver, a 17-year-old, was trapped inside the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Abington Police Chief John Bonney said, “The operator was driving, in possession of a stolen motor vehicle,” emphasizing the circumstances surrounding the pursuit.
Witnesses reported the SUV was traveling at a high speed prior to the crash. Surveillance video indicated the vehicle ran a red light moments before colliding with the tree.
One witness described hearing “excessive speed” before the crash, followed by a quick police response.
The officer involved in the chase has been placed on paid administrative leave per department policy.
Washington Street was closed between Central Street and Lincoln Boulevard as emergency crews managed the scene.
The Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit is collaborating with Abington police in the ongoing investigation.
