Secret Service apprehends driver fleeing the scene of a deadly crash near the White House.

A two-vehicle crash near the White House early Saturday left one passenger dead and another driver injured.

According to the United States Park Police (USPP), the incident occurred at approximately 3:30 a.m. at the intersection of 17th Street and Constitution Avenue NW.

Authorities said one driver fled on foot but was quickly apprehended by U.S. Secret Service Uniformed Division members. The suspect was subsequently transferred to USPP custody.

The driver of the second vehicle was with non-life-threatening injuries, while a passenger was at the scene after being from the vehicle, police reported.

The District of Columbia Office of the Chief Medical Examiner transported the deceased.

The USPP Traffic Safety Unit conducted an initial investigation and crash reconstruction. Following consultation with the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia, the USPP is now leading the investigation and handling the suspect's arrest.

The suspect remains in custody, with charges pending, according to authorities.

Road closures related to the investigation have been lifted, and all affected roadways have reopened. The investigation is ongoing.
