Abington SUV Crash Claims Second Life
ABINGTON, MA — A second fatality was confirmed Friday in a crash involving a stolen SUV that occurred Wednesday morning on Washington Street.
According to the Plymouth County District Attorney's Office, a female victim succumbed to her injuries sustained in the crash with a tree, which involved five individuals aged 14 to 17. The driver, identified as 17-year-old Sebastian Hamilton of Weymouth, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities reported that a 14-year-old passenger was ejected from the vehicle; the remaining passengers suffered life-threatening injuries and were transported to nearby hospitals before being transferred to Boston for advanced care.
The incident began when an Abington Police officer spotted the stolen Hyundai Santa Fe, which had been reported stolen from Brockton. When an attempted traffic stop was initiated, the vehicle fled at high speed, subsequently crashing into a tree.
Bonney praised first responders for their “heroic efforts” in assisting the victims. Washington Street was temporarily closed between Central Street and Lincoln Boulevard, prompting motorists to seek alternate routes.
The investigation is ongoing, with the officer involved in the chase currently on administrative leave. The officer's name has not been disclosed, but has been with the department for under two years.
“This is certainly a traumatic crash,” said Abington Police Chief John Bonney, adding that the officer involved is a “kind, caring human being.”
