LEXINGTON, KY (October 5, 2023) — A crash Thursday morning on Winchester Road marks at least the sixth incident in Lexington in the past month.

Authorities reported that the Lexington Police Department responded to the scene at approximately 9:15 a.m. The number of vehicles involved and any confirmed injuries or fatalities are yet to be disclosed.

According to the Kentucky State Police, there were over 1,500 motorcycle-related crashes last year, resulting in 1,072 injuries and 111 fatalities. Lori Weaver-Hawkins of AAA Blue Grass noted that these statistics do not include mopeds or scooters, which could further increase totals.

As central Kentucky enters the late spring and summer months, the number of motorcycles on the road is expected to rise, consequently leading to more accidents. May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, prompting Weaver-Hawkins to emphasize the importance of road safety.

Weaver-Hawkins highlighted common causes of accidents, including by motorcyclists and other vehicles. She also noted ongoing issues with in the city that pose additional hazards.

“Motorcyclists need to follow the rules of the road, just like drivers of four-wheel vehicles,” Weaver-Hawkins said. “These crashes are all preventable, but we all have to do our part.”

Witnesses reported that hazardous road conditions, like , can lead motorcyclists to swerve unexpectedly. Additionally, visibility issues with smaller vehicles can contribute to accidents.

The investigation into Thursday's crash is ongoing. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
