Pedestrian Fatality Reported in East Washington Avenue Crash.

MADISON (WKOW) — A was killed in a crash Wednesday morning on East Washington Avenue.

The incident occurred at 11:45 a.m. at the intersection with Paterson Street, according to the Madison Police Department. The crash scene is located near Breese Stevens Field.

All westbound lanes of East Washington Avenue were closed between Livingston Street and Brearly Street for several hours and reopened by 3:53 p.m.

Authorities said a struck a pedestrian crossing East Washington Avenue, although it remains unclear if the pedestrian was in a crosswalk. The initial impact caused the to collide with three to four other vehicles before it wrapped around a tree.

Madison Police Captain Kipp Hartman indicated that speed is believed to be a factor in the crash, noting substantial damage and a large debris field extending down the block. Investigators are also assessing whether alcohol or drug use was involved.

“Two days ago, we launched a traffic initiative aimed at reducing fatal accidents,” Hartman remarked. “Unfortunately, this incident occurred so soon after.”

Hartman urged drivers to adhere to speed limits and remain vigilant for pedestrians. He emphasized the importance of using designated crosswalks for pedestrian safety.
