ADAMS COUNTY, N.D. — A 24-year-old man from Michigan died today while serving as a pilot car for an oversize load.
Shortly after 10 a.m., a Toyota Tundra was traveling westbound on Highway 12, just east of Hettinger. The driver, who was working as a pilot car, reportedly rear-ended an International truck and trailer driven by a 72-year-old Hettinger man.
Authorities confirmed that the Tundra was moving at speeds between 65-70 mph, while the truck and trailer were moving at 45 mph. Neither the driver nor the 20-year-old passenger in the International truck sustained injuries.
The Michigan man died at the scene, and law enforcement noted he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision. NDHP has not provided details regarding the condition of the oversize load driver following the incident.
An investigation is underway, and further updates will be provided as they become available.
