RICHMOND, Va. — A fatal crash occurred on Interstate 95 in Richmond on Tuesday evening, resulting in one confirmed death, according to the Virginia State Police.
The incident took place around 7:54 p.m. on the southbound lanes of I-95, just before the Exit 75 interchange leading to Interstate 64 eastbound within the City of Richmond.
Investigators reported that a 2004 Lexus RX330 was traveling southbound between the 77 and 76 mile markers when it sideswiped a Honda Fit. Subsequently, it collided with the left concrete jersey wall and overturned into the left lane of I-95 southbound, prior to Exit 75, as outlined by a spokesperson from the Virginia State Police based on preliminary findings.
The driver of the Lexus was pronounced dead at the scene, and authorities are withholding the individual's identity until notification of next of kin. Police confirmed that the driver was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident.
Debris from the crash impacted at least three vehicles traveling northbound on I-95; however, no additional collisions were reported on that side of the highway.
In the aftermath of the crash, authorities closed the left shoulders and left lanes on both the northbound and southbound sides for investigation and cleanup efforts. The Virginia State Police are continuing their investigation into the incident.
