JAMESTOWN, N.D. — Authorities confirmed no charges will be filed against the semitruck driver involved in a fatal pedestrian accident on January 21, 2026.
The crash occurred on Fourth Street Northeast near Fifth Avenue Northeast, just 50 feet from the victim's home. Sixteen-year-old Jake Stiles was reportedly crossing the street after purchasing a soda from a nearby Dollar General when he was struck by the rear passenger tires of a side dump trailer.
Capt. Bryan Niewind of the North Dakota Highway Patrol stated there was one eyewitness to the incident, and no evidence indicated Stiles was distracted while crossing. “We can show how a crash happened, but understanding why someone made a specific decision is often challenging,” Niewind said.
In response to community concerns, the North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) is assessing the intersection for safety improvements. Recommendations include brighter crosswalk markings and the removal of trees to enhance visibility. Changes are expected to be implemented by summer 2026.
The Stiles family, who moved from their home nearby due to emotional distress, declined further comment.
