Spartanburg County Sheriff's Captain Dies in Motorcycle Crash
WALHALLA, S.C. — Capt. Steve Henderson, 49, of the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office, died in a motorcycle crash on Highway 183 shortly after 8 p.m. on August 14.
According to the Oconee County Coroner's Office, Henderson was traveling north when his 2008 Harley-Davidson motorcycle crossed the centerline and collided head-on with a southbound 2004 Chevrolet SUV. He was wearing a helmet at the time of the incident.
Emergency services received a call at 8:16 p.m., but Henderson succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
Henderson, a veteran of nearly 20 years with the sheriff's office, held the position of uniform patrol commander and had previously served in the U.S. Air Force from 1994 to 1998.
“Authorities said he was known for his straightforward nature and willingness to assist others,” noted former Cpl. Nick Duncan of the sheriff's office.
A memorial post from former Spartanburg County Clerk of Court Hope Blackley conveyed, “He had a heart of gold and fairness. Steve, we will miss you but you'll always be remembered in our hearts forever.”
