HUDSONVILLE, Mich. — A chain-reaction crash involving nearly 100 vehicles occurred on I-196 near Hudsonville on January 15, causing significant disruptions.
According to authorities, the incident involved 30 to 40 semi-trucks and forced a full closure of the freeway in both directions for several hours. Poor visibility and icy conditions were reported as contributing factors.
Emergency services responded quickly, with multiple agencies on scene to assist those trapped in their vehicles. Medical personnel evaluated numerous injuries; however, no fatalities have been confirmed at this time.
Witnesses described witnessing the chaos, with one caller stating, “There is a semi across the road… broken in half… and cars piling up.” Another added, “Blocking both lanes… all the way across.”
Community support emerged rapidly, as local school officials and residents provided aid to stranded drivers. School buses transported individuals to Hudsonville High School for warmth and safety.
Affected families expressed gratitude for the community's swift response. “I could hear that he was okay. We were grateful and thankful that he is safe,” said Pamela Flowers regarding her son, who was involved in the pileup.
The investigation into the crash is ongoing. Authorities have not yet released additional details.
