TULSA, Okla. (WKRC) – An Oklahoma father was sentenced to five years in prison after a January 2024 crash that killed his 16-year-old daughter.
Elliott Binney, 39, was sentenced on June 8, 2026, after pleading guilty to first-degree manslaughter, leaving the scene of a fatal accident, transporting an open container, and two counts of child neglect. According to authorities, Binney lost control of his vehicle, carrying family members, on January 11, causing it to roll over multiple times.
Responding officers found Shelby Binney critically injured after being ejected from the vehicle; she later succumbed to her injuries. Several juvenile passengers were also involved in the crash.
Witnesses reported that the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed in rainy conditions, passing other vehicles in a no-passing zone prior to the incident. An open bottle of vodka was discovered near the scene, and Binney admitted to having consumed alcohol while driving.
Following the crash, Binney fled on foot but was located approximately 40 miles away in Checotah. Despite the open vodka bottle and his admission, prosecutors stated there was insufficient evidence to prove he was legally impaired at the time of the crash.
“What Mr. Binney did after the rollover crash is what got him a prison sentence,” Tulsa County District Attorney Steve Kunzweiler said.
