Two Fatal Crashes at Arapahoe County Intersection Renew Safety Concerns

Cherry Hills Village, CO — Two years after a fatal crash claimed the life of 59-year-old Andreia Lea Goldberg, her husband, Gerald “Gerry” Goldberg, also died in an accident at the same intersection, East Belleview Avenue and South Franklin Street, on Monday.

Authorities confirmed both fatalities occurred at the unsignalized crossing. Andreia was struck while crossing the street in May 2024, prompting Gerry to campaign for traffic signal installation at the site.

Gerry's death, verified by the county coroner's office, reignited discussions regarding traffic safety in the area. In response, Cherry Hills Village officials announced that they will expedite a traffic signal warrant study originally set for discussion on March 17. According to a city spokesperson, this evaluation will assess traffic volume, crash history, and activity to determine compliance with Colorado Department of Transportation standards for a traffic signal.

Cherry Hills Village and Greenwood Village staff will collaborate on reviewing the intersection. Greenwood Village officials noted their ongoing commitment to safety amidst community concerns regarding an increase in neighborhood traffic if a signal is installed.

Gerry Goldberg co-founded Andie's Light following his wife's death, advocating for safer conditions at the intersection. He and former Greenwood Village councilmember Jerry Presley highlighted the intersection's history of accidents in an op-ed submitted to local media.

As investigations continue, officials urge the community to come together to address safety measures.
