Body of man who died in fire sent to GBI lab for investigation

SAVANNAH, GA — The body of a man who died in a car fire Tuesday night is being transported to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) crime lab in Savannah.

The incident occurred around 10:15 p.m. on Highway 80 near mile marker 25. Authorities confirmed that a single vehicle was involved in the fire. Emergency responders from the Chatham County Fire Department arrived on the scene but were unable to revive the individual.

The identity of the deceased has not yet been released pending notification of next of kin. Authorities reported no other injuries as a result of the fire.

According to the Georgia State Patrol, they are currently investigating the cause of the fire and the circumstances leading to the vehicle's ignition. Witnesses reported seeing flames engulfing the vehicle shortly after the accident.

The eastbound lane of Highway 80 remained closed for several hours during the investigation and cleanup. Towing services have since removed the vehicle from the scene.
