MITCHELL — Two adults were killed in a crash on Interstate 90 on Wednesday afternoon.

Authorities said the incident occurred at 5:12 p.m. between the two I-90 exits in Mitchell.

A 34-year-old male driver and a 38-year-old female passenger, both residents of Pierre, died at the scene. Two children, a 1-year-old girl and a 3-year-old boy, sustained minor injuries.

Investigators reported that the driver was operating a 2018 Ram eastbound on I-90 when the vehicle veered into the south ditch, struck a guardrail cable, and rolled down an embankment. The vehicle came to rest on a retaining wall after falling to Rowley Street.

All occupants were wearing seat belts. The cause of the crash remains under investigation, according to a South Dakota Department of Public Safety spokesperson. The children were transported to a hospital until family members could take over their care.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol is actively investigating the incident. Names of those involved are being withheld pending notification of family.

Responding agencies included the Mitchell Police Division, the Mitchell Fire/EMS Division, and the Davison County Sheriff's Office.

This marks the second fatal crash in Davison County within a 24-hour period, following the death of a 46-year-old man from Ethan in a separate incident on Tuesday night.
