OGDEN, Utah (KUTV) — A fatal crash involving a 14-year-old driver, which resulted in two child fatalities, is under investigation by local authorities.
The incident occurred on Friday night after Ogden police attempted to stop a stolen vehicle driven by the teen. According to authorities, the driver fled, struck a patrol car, and subsequently crashed into another vehicle carrying two adults and six children. The crash site is just over a mile from the attempted stop.
An 11-year-old child was ejected and died at the scene, while a 7-year-old succumbed to injuries later. Those involved in the crash, including the driver and a 14-year-old passenger in the stolen vehicle, were transported to the hospital with injuries.
The juvenile suspect remains hospitalized, and charges will only be pursued once they are released, according to the Weber County Attorney. The attorney stated that a decision on potential charges could be made following a review of the case with police on Monday.
Questions regarding the pursuit leading up to the crash have arisen, notably whether officers followed departmental policy during the incident. Ogden police have not commented on the case and whether they engaged in a pursuit.
Legal expert Robert Sikes noted that police must prioritize public safety when deciding to initiate pursuits, particularly in urban areas with high pedestrian traffic. Under Ogden police policy, pursuits are not to be engaged for minor offenses, with vehicle theft classified as a second-degree felony in Utah.
No identifying information regarding the driver or passenger has been released, and police will disclose additional details when appropriate. Community members expressed concern and frustration over the circumstances leading to the crash, calling for more accountability.
Investigators have not provided additional details regarding the speed of the vehicle or the duration of the chase.
