STAFFORD COUNTY, Va. (WJLA) — Five people are dead and over 30 injured following a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 95 southbound early Friday morning.
According to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), the incident occurred near mile marker 146 at approximately 2:35 a.m., about two miles south of Exit 148 for Quantico. Virginia State Police reported that traffic was slowing ahead of a work zone when a bus failed to stop, colliding with six vehicles.
Authorities confirmed five fatalities among those in the struck vehicles, and 34 individuals were transported to local hospitals, with three suffering from critical injuries. A spokesperson for Stafford County Fire and Rescue indicated that one victim was airlifted to a hospital, while the others were taken via ambulance.
As of 10 a.m., two southbound lanes of I-95 remain open at mile marker 146, but travelers are advised to use alternate routes to avoid delays. The detour has been lifted at Exit 148 (Quantico).
The crash is under active investigation, and charges are anticipated, authorities said.
