SALT LAKE COUNTY, Utah — A significant safety concern has emerged as over 65% of car seats in Utah are reportedly installed or used incorrectly, heightening risks for children in vehicle crashes.
According to local experts, Child Passenger Safety Week, celebrated during the week of September 20, emphasizes crucial mistakes made by parents. Dr. Hilary Hewes, a pediatric emergency medicine physician at Primary Children's Hospital, noted the stark difference in outcomes for properly secured children versus those who are not.
“Two years ago, a family of seven was traveling in a van; six were secured, but one child was ejected from the vehicle and died. Proper car seat usage can mean the difference between life and death,” Dr. Hewes stated.
One prevalent issue involves the chest clip and harness fit. Sarah Knudsen, a child passenger safety technician at Primary Children's Hospital, highlighted that many parents leave the harness too loose. “The chest clip should be at armpit level to secure the child properly,” Knudsen said.
Additionally, experts warn against positioning seatbelts too high on a child's stomach. “When a crash occurs, a high seatbelt can cause serious internal injuries,” an instructor explained.
Resources for car seat inspections are accessible throughout the year, not solely during Child Passenger Safety Week. Parents are encouraged to utilize car seat inspection stations available in Utah.
