E-bike and E-scooter Accidents Surge Amid Data Gaps
LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — E-bike and e-scooter accidents are increasingly reported, but reliable data remains limited.

Neama Rahmani, President and CEO of West Coast Trial Lawyers, highlighted a rise in scooter-related incidents, citing conversations with trauma surgeons. “Information and data can make the public more safe,” he stated.

Limited jurisdictions, such as Las Vegas, Huntington Beach, Marin County, New York City, and Palm Beach County, provide some collision statistics. Rahmani criticized the practice of grouping e-bike incidents with traditional bicycles, emphasizing a need for tailored data collection.

In New York City, fatalities involving e-bikes and e-scooters rose significantly from 11 between 2017 and 2019 to 46 from 2020 to 2022. Rahmani pointed out that increased access to this data might discourage parents from allowing children to ride without helmets, saying, “If people knew how dangerous these scooters were, there would be fewer parents and children riding them.”

He called for new safety regulations, noting current state laws lack age and helmet restrictions for e-scooters and e-bikes. While Clark County mandates helmets for minors, no such requirement exists statewide. “Changes in laws would certainly help these children,” Rahmani added.
