Martha's Vineyard Minivan Incident Results in Driver Fatality
A fatal crash involving a minivan occurred at the Steamship Authority's Vineyard Haven Terminal at approximately 9:15 a.m. on Wednesday, July 8.
According to the Cape and Islands District Attorney's Office, the unidentified driver died following the incident. No charges have been filed, and the district attorney's office stated it is not directly involved in the investigation.
Witnesses reported that the white minivan drove at high speed onto the vehicle deck of the M/V Island Home ferry before reaching the loading area. The Steamship Authority confirmed the vehicle traversed the empty deck and collided with the stern loading doors.
No passengers or crew members were injured in the incident. The minivan was subsequently removed, leading to cancellations of trips on the M/V Island Home through the noon departure.
Later that day, the U.S. Coast Guard cleared the M/V Island Home to return to Woods Hole for maintenance personnel to assess any damage and determine necessary repairs.
