MAGNA, Utah (KUTV) — Construction is underway on the dirt road where a deadly crash involving high school students occurred in March.

The crash, which resulted in the death of a 15-year-old girl and involved nine students from Cyprus High School, took place on 4100 South behind the school. Following extensive discussions among stakeholders, development plans for the road are now being executed, according to authorities.

Construction began approximately a week and a half ago, transforming the once rough dirt road used as a shortcut to a smoother path. “People fly by here,” said local resident Natalia Malina shortly after the crash.

On Thursday, Magna City Council approved an agreement with D.R. Horton for an extension of the road from 8400 West to the Little Valley Development, targeting an August 26 completion date, according to Magna City Attorney Nathan Bracken. Officials aim to finish the project before the new school year begins.

Concerns about traffic congestion arose when the school opened last year, prompting city officials to address road safety and capacity. A D.R. Horton representative noted that more intensive work had been delayed due to potential disruptions at the 8400 intersection, which could complicate existing traffic issues.

With the extension impacting the intersection at 8400 South, drivers are advised to remain vigilant while traveling through the area.
