University of Rhode Island Mourns Loss of Staff Member Struck by Vehicle
The University of Rhode Island is mourning the death of Maureen McDermott, who passed away on Friday, November 17, after being struck by a car on campus.
According to university officials, McDermott, the director of student involvement and the Memorial Union, succumbed to injuries sustained in a vehicle-pedestrian crash on Lower College Road at approximately 5 p.m. on November 6. The vehicle involved was driven by a URI student, who is cooperating with police and receiving support services.
The university has remained in contact with McDermott's family and extended condolences to her friends, colleagues, and students. McDermott joined URI in 1981 and served for over four decades, leaving a lasting legacy. Ellen Reynolds, Vice President for Student Affairs, noted her dedication to students and advocacy for campus organizations.
McDermott was also a proud URI parent, frequently attending sporting events with her husband, Paul. Their three sons are alumni of the university.
