SOCIAL WORKER STRUCK BY PICKUP TRUCK IN FATAL ACCIDENT ON US-75 NEAR TOPEKA
TOPEKA, Kan. — A school social worker was fatally struck by a pickup truck on September 10 while assisting at the scene of a prior accident on US-75, south of Topeka.
Sarah J. McLaughlin-Olson, 44, of Topeka, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol accident report. The incident occurred around 4:18 p.m., approximately three-quarters of a mile south of SW 57th and US-75.
McLaughlin-Olson was helping individuals involved in an earlier crash when the accident happened. A 2021 Honda Civic driven by Amy Shotts, 41, of Wakarusa, had crossed the median and come to rest on the northbound shoulder of US-75.
Mason W. Allen, 18, of Decatur, Iowa, was driving a 2013 Ford F-350 pickup truck and towing a horse trailer when he approached the collision site. He braked but veered left, striking Shotts' vehicle and McLaughlin-Olson, who was on foot.
Shotts was transported to Stormont Vail Health in Topeka with suspected serious injuries. Allen and his three passengers were reportedly unharmed. Witnesses indicated that Shotts was wearing a seat belt, while Allen and his passengers were not.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
