Claymont Man Charged After Fatal Bicycle Crash Near Milton
Milton, DE—A Claymont man, 22-year-old Tahrie Calloway, faces charges following a fatal bicycle crash on Sand Hill Road at approximately 7:39 a.m. on July 26.
According to police, Calloway was driving a 2017 Honda Accord northbound on Sand Hill Road when he struck 67-year-old Sylvester Person of Milford, who was riding his bicycle along the road's east edge. Person was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Authorities reported that Calloway did not remain at the crash scene but was found about a mile north with damage to the front right bumper and windshield of his vehicle. A responding emergency official noted that Calloway claimed he struck a log while attempting to evade a tractor-trailer and observed him wiping blood from his car with a T-shirt.
Police confirmed Calloway was driving under the influence, with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.124, exceeding the legal limit of 0.08. He was charged with second-degree vehicular homicide, tampering with physical evidence, leaving the scene of a collision resulting in death, and inattentive driving. Calloway was arraigned and is being held at Sussex Correctional Institution on an $18,101 cash bond.
The roadway was closed for about three hours for investigation and cleanup.
