BYU International Studies Director Dies in Provo Crash Near Interstate 15.

Vincent Stanley Benfell, 63, died after being struck by a vehicle while bicycling near Interstate 15 in Provo on Sept. 7.

The incident occurred shortly after 8 a.m. as a vehicle exited the freeway and collided with Benfell at an intersection, according to Provo Police.

Benfell, director of Brigham Young University's David M. Kennedy Center for International Studies since 2021, was transported to Utah Valley Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Authorities confirmed that the driver remained on-scene and is cooperating with investigators. No signs of impairment were noted, though standard laboratory tests are pending.

The investigation will remain open until the medical examiner's report and lab results are available, typically within the next 30 days.
