B-52 Stratofortress Crash at Edwards Air Force Base Kills Eight

EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, CA — A B-52 Stratofortress crashed during a test mission on Monday, killing all eight people onboard.

The incident occurred around 11:20 a.m. shortly after takeoff from the base, located approximately 100 miles north of Los Angeles. According to authorities, those on board included military personnel, government civilians, and contractors.

Among the victims was Jeromy Smith, a civilian flight test engineer and father of two. Witnesses reported he was conducting a radar test mission at the time of the crash. His wife, Lauren Smith, described the event as “flipping our world upside-down” upon learning of the tragedy.

The crash site was marked by black smoke, and base officials closed all inbound air traffic as the investigation commenced. Colonel James Hayes, deputy commander for the 412th Test Wing, stated, “We lost eight great Americans.”

Boeing later confirmed that two of its employees were among the deceased. A thorough investigation into the cause of the crash is expected to take months, as authorities gather more information.

Emergency response teams were quickly deployed to the scene. Details about injuries were not provided, but the crash has prompted an extensive review of safety protocols at the base.

Edwards Air Force Base, used for the testing and development of military aircraft, has a storied history dating back to significant aviation milestones, including Chuck Yeager’s supersonic flight in 1947.
