An Arlington couple died in a multi-vehicle collision on Texas 171, located about two miles north of Hillsboro, Saturday evening. The crash occurred around 8:30 p.m. and involved several vehicles, including a farm tractor towing equipment.
The Texas Department of Public Safety reported that the northbound tractor was struck by a Ford Fiesta, which had just passed a pickup truck when it collided with the farm equipment. This impact caused the equipment to detach, leading to further chaos on the roadway.
Two southbound vehicles, a Chevrolet Traverse and a Ford F-150, subsequently struck the detached equipment. Following the collisions, several occupants exited their vehicles and stood on the roadway.
Tragically, 39-year-old Zachary Barton and his wife, Katherine Barton, also 39, were both hit while standing in the road. They were pronounced dead at the scene. A 12-year-old passenger from the Traverse suffered critical injuries. The driver of the Fiesta, responsible for the initial collision, was also critically injured.
No additional injuries were reported from the other vehicles involved. The DPS has not yet indicated whether the driver who struck the couple and child will face charges. Investigators are continuing their inquiry and suspect alcohol might have played a role in the initial crash.
