CHESAPEAKE, Va. — A 19-year-old Navy sailor was granted bond on Monday following a fatal crash that claimed the life of a landscaper on May 29.
Synclair Tyrone Mayes, initially denied bond on June 12, had his bond set at $15,000 upon appeal. He is prohibited from accessing a vehicle and must reside with his aunt in Virginia Beach. His attorneys cited his lack of a criminal history as grounds for bond.
Mayes faces involuntary manslaughter charges after a crash involving a black sedan and a red SUV. According to authorities, the incident occurred at approximately 9:49 a.m. as the sedan was speeding southbound on Johnstown Road, striking the SUV turning from Britwell Drive.
The impact caused the sedan to veer off the roadway, fatally striking 60-year-old Guadalupe Rivera, who was working nearby. He was pronounced dead at the scene, while both drivers sustained minor injuries and were transported to local hospitals.
During the bond hearing, prosecutors presented evidence indicating that the engine block of the other vehicle was found 67 feet from the crash site. Data from Mayes' sedan suggested he was driving between 83 and 95 miles per hour in a work zone marked with a 35 mph speed limit.
Guadalupe Rivera, remembered as a kind man, is survived by eight children and 33 grandchildren and great-grandchildren, according to his brother Joe.
