HENRICO COUNTY, Va. — Highland Springs Little Leaguers honored their late teammate, Justus Lee, during their season opener on Saturday.
According to team members, they felt Justus' presence while taking the field. In his memory, players wore jerseys featuring the number 4 and angel wings.
Joshua Lee, Justus' father, threw the ceremonial first pitch, and the team won the game.
The six-year-old outfielder, a first-grader at Fair Oaks Elementary, died in a vehicle crash in January, days before his seventh birthday.
According to Virginia State Police, the crash occurred on Interstate 64 near Nine Mile Road. They reported that an eastbound driver lost control while using a phone, striking the center guardrail. A second vehicle, traveling behind the first, also lost control trying to avoid the initial collision.
Justus was in the second vehicle with his mother, heading home from his grandmother's. Police stated he died at the scene.
