A man was sentenced to prison for killing a newlywed while driving under the influence on September 3, 2025.

Travis Patrick McIntyre, 42, received a prison term of five to 15 years after pleading guilty to automobile homicide. He was credited with 294 days already served.

The incident occurred as 26-year-old Matthew Daines and his pregnant wife walked along a sidewalk near 400 South and 40 East. Authorities reported that McIntyre lost control of his vehicle, veering onto the sidewalk and striking the couple. Daines pushed his wife to safety before being hit; he later succumbed to his injuries.

McIntyre's blood alcohol content was measured at 0.307, exceeding Utah's legal limit of 0.05. He entered a guilty plea on May 5, leading to the dismissal of additional charges related to drug possession and operating a vehicle on a denied license.

The case has drawn significant attention, with witnesses describing Daines' actions as heroic. A memorial near the crash site featured a “Superman cape,” symbolizing his sacrifice.

Witness Landon Owens reported that he and coworkers rushed to render aid immediately after the crash. Following the incident, Springville police reiterated the harsh consequences of impaired driving, urging the community to report suspected intoxicated drivers.
