BOSTON, MA – October 8, 2023 – A Hyde Park man has been charged with murder after allegedly carjacking a vehicle and fatally striking a pedestrian in Mattapan.
Ibraim Matos, 37, was arrested following the incident on Blue Hill Avenue around 2:41 p.m. on Saturday. Authorities said Matos crashed his vehicle at the intersection of Woodhaven and Blue Hill Avenue before exiting and forcibly taking another driver's car near 1480 Blue Hill Avenue.
Matos reportedly drove away in the stolen vehicle, heading the wrong way toward Mattapan Square. During this pursuit, he mounted the sidewalk, striking and killing a woman whose identity has not yet been released. He was stopped after colliding with multiple vehicles, including an MBTA bus. Officers arrived to find witnesses restraining him.
Matos faces several charges, including murder, carjacking, and leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death. The roadway was closed for an extended period but has since reopened.
In a separate incident, Robert Monestime, 21, of Braintree, was arrested for walking through the crime scene. Charged with disturbing the peace and interfering with a police officer, Monestime allegedly disregarded police tape while recording on his phone. He will be arraigned in Dorchester District Court.
Witnesses in the area expressed their shock and trauma following the events. “It's just like the car was speeding down like out of control,” said local resident Darline Duverne. “She tried to go on the sidewalk and then the next thing we know…”
