ROMNEY, Ind. (WRTV) — A car driver died Friday afternoon in a head-on collision with a semitractor-tanker on U.S. 231, according to the Tippecanoe County Sheriff's Office.
The driver was the sole occupant of the vehicle and was wearing a seat belt. The Tippecanoe County Coroner's Office is working to confirm the driver's identity.
U.S. 231 was closed for several hours between County Road 800 South and State Road 28 for the investigation, authorities said.
Witnesses reported that around 12:30 p.m., the car was southbound when it crossed the centerline, colliding with a northbound semi hauling anhydrous ammonia, approximately one mile north of Romney. No ammonia leaked from the tanker following the crash.
The impact caused the semi to hit a guardrail near a bridge before coming to a stop in a wooded area. The semi's driver, Isaac Hood, 29, of Fowler, was uninjured and declined medical treatment.
Authorities stated that there is no suspicion of drugs or alcohol being factors in the crash, although toxicology testing will be conducted as part of standard procedures.
Romney is located about an hour northwest of downtown Indianapolis.
