COLUMBIA — A suspect in a murder case crashed during a police pursuit near a University of South Carolina wellness center on April 29, leading to temporary road closures on campus.

Authorities said the State Law Enforcement Division and Richland County Sheriff's Office Fugitive Teams chased the suspect into Columbia, culminating in a vehicle stop at Assembly and Blossom streets. The suspect fled on foot and was apprehended at the Strom Thurmond Wellness and Fitness Center, according to officials.

No injuries were reported, and the campus remains secure, stated Jeff Stensland, USC's Associate Vice President of University Communications. The area is blocked off as the investigation continues, prompting officials to advise motorists to seek alternative routes.

USC issued a Carolina Alert at 1:38 p.m. regarding the heightened law enforcement activity, noting there was no imminent danger to the community. A follow-up alert at 3:13 p.m. confirmed, “The public safety incident at Blossom and Assembly at the Columbia campus has been resolved. All affected streets have been reopened.”

SLED previously reported potential delays as they processed the crime scene and cleared the vehicle.
