Teen dies and father is injured in Iowa train derailment near Victor.

June 4, 2026, 12:21 p.m. CT – A June 3 derailment in Poweshiek County has resulted in one fatality and one injury, according to the Iowa State Patrol.

The victims are identified as Michael Orton, 38, and his son, Robert Orton, 14, from Palmyra, Missouri. The incident occurred on Iowa Highway 21 near Victor when a semitrailer failed to yield at a crossing, leading to a collision with an Iowa Interstate train.

Robert Orton was at the scene, while Michael Orton sustained serious injuries and was transported to University of Iowa Health Care hospitals via Life Flight. His current medical status is unknown. The train's conductor and engineer were also with minor injuries.

The Iowa State Patrol, along with the Poweshiek County Sheriff's Office, Iowa County Sheriff's Office, and Iowa Department of Transportation, is investigating the crash.
