STAFFORD COUNTY, Va. (7News) — A bus driver involved in a devastating chain reaction crash on Interstate 95 that left five dead and many injured now faces additional charges.
Jing Sheng Dong, 48, of Staten Island, New York, has been charged with three counts of involuntary manslaughter and a misdemeanor for reckless driving, supplementing two existing involuntary manslaughter charges. Dong was previously cited by Maryland State Police for speeding in March, facing a court appearance scheduled for Tuesday in Annapolis.
The crash occurred around 1:20 a.m. when Dong, operating an E&P Travel charter bus, collided with stopped traffic near a work zone, according to Virginia State Police (VSP). The bus struck a Chevrolet Suburban, which subsequently collided with an Acura SUV and other vehicles, leading to a multi-vehicle pileup.
Five fatalities, including two children, have been confirmed, along with approximately 44 injured individuals, three of whom are critically hurt. Mary Washington Healthcare reported that of the 19 patients treated, only three remain hospitalized: one in critical condition, another in serious condition, and one recently upgraded to fair condition.
Dong was injured in the crash and remains hospitalized but is in the custody of Rappahannock Regional Jail. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is investigating, focusing on driver actions and vehicle condition. NTSB investigators are examining video evidence and seeking witness statements.
Authorities have indicated that a preliminary report will be released within 30 days.
