PLAINVILLE, Mass. —
Two people are injured, one seriously, after a car crashed on I-495 in Plainville, Massachusetts, on Sunday.
The incident occurred just after 1:30 p.m. involving an electric vehicle. First responders administered CPR to one occupant at the scene.
Authorities reported that several bystanders attempted to rescue the driver and passenger, using tools including a boulder to break through the vehicle's glass.
Ashland Lt. Fire Chief David Iarussi, who was returning from a wedding, was among those who assisted. “I looked in the gulley and saw a bunch of big rocks, and thought I have to do that,” Iarussi said.
During the rescue, the vehicle caught fire, prompting Iarussi to prioritize urgent extraction. “The fire changed everything; I know how fast these cars can burn up,” he noted.
With the help of fire extinguishers and the bystanders, the flames were contained, allowing the victims to be safely removed.
Both victims, a man and a woman, were transported to a nearby hospital; one sustained life-threatening injuries. Their current conditions are not available.
