Hernan Marrero, 50, of Roslindale, died in a wrong-way crash that also claimed the life of Massachusetts State Police Trooper Kevin Trainor, 30, early Wednesday morning on Route 1 North.

Marrero was traveling south in a northbound lane near the Saugus/Lynnfield line when the collision occurred. Both individuals died at the scene, according to authorities.

Marrero had a documented history of marital and financial difficulties. His ex-wife, Sarah Bartels-Marrero, filed for divorce in 2022 after over 20 years of marriage. Court records indicated that their relationship faced significant challenges, including allegations of an affair and financial strain.

Bartels-Marrero stated in court documents that her ex-husband suffered a major depressive episode following a knee injury in 2014, which contributed to his departure from his engineering consulting job. She claimed he struggled with debts and had minimal involvement in their three children's care.

The couple's divorce was finalized in May 2023. NewsCenter 5 is seeking comments from Bartels-Marrero's attorney.
