Driver dies in crash after hitting excavator on I-64

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — A 21-year-old driver died late Sunday night after crashing into an excavator on I-64.

The incident occurred around 11:53 p.m. while traveling eastbound on I-64, west of Oyster Point Road, according to Virginia State Police. The driver, identified as Rishard Harvey of Hampton, reportedly ran off the roadway, struck an attenuator, and subsequently collided with a parked excavator.

Following the impact, Harvey's vehicle caught fire, and he was unable to escape. Emergency responders arrived at the scene, but he was shortly after.

Authorities confirmed that the construction area was not active at the time of the crash and no other vehicles were involved. Police are investigating the circumstances that led to the driver leaving the roadway, but no cause has been determined as of now.
