NORTH RICHLAND HILLS, TX — A fatal crash involving a suspected drunk driver occurred early on Thanksgiving morning, claiming the life of 17-year-old Benjamin Castaneda.
According to police, Castaneda was driving on Loop 820 when an oncoming vehicle, driven by 29-year-old Neomi Martinez, collided with his car while traveling the wrong direction. Authorities confirmed that Martinez has been charged with intoxication manslaughter.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene but could not save Castaneda, who was remembered at a vigil Monday at North Side High School, where hundreds gathered to honor the mariachi singer.
Principal Tony Martinez addressed attendees, emphasizing community support during the tragic time. “Words cannot express what you're feeling,” he said, urging everyone to celebrate Castaneda's life.
Witnesses reported that members of Castaneda's mariachi band, known as Espuelas de Plata, performed in his memory, sharing a mix of sorrow and joy through their music. “We'll always remember Ben to be that smiling kid who was full of life,” said mariachi director Ramon Nino.
Castaneda's father expressed a heartfelt message to the youth: “Don't drink and drive.” The gathering concluded with the release of purple balloons into the sky, with attendees saying, “We love you, Ben.”
The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and police have not released additional details regarding lane closures or towed vehicles.
