Two U.S. Embassy officials and two Mexican officials killed in a crash in Chihuahua on Sunday.

CHIHUAHUA, Mexico (TNND) — Two U.S. Embassy officials and a Mexican official died in a crash on Sunday while responding to a drug lab operation in Morelos.

According to authorities, the crash involved a total of four individuals: two U.S. officials and two Mexican officials, including an officer. The details surrounding the incident, including the time and specific circumstances, are under investigation.

U.S. Ambassador to Mexico Ronald Johnson expressed condolences, emphasizing the dangers faced by officials dedicated to community safety. “This tragedy is a solemn reminder of the risks faced by those Mexican and U.S. officials,” Johnson stated on X.

The crash occurred in relation to heightened tensions following the death of Jalisco New Generation Cartel leader Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho,” who was killed by Mexican military forces in February. Subsequent violent outbreaks resulted in the deaths of 30 cartel members and 25 Mexican National Guard members.

Emergency response teams attended to the scene, and further details regarding lane closures and potential tows are forthcoming as authorities continue to investigate.
